Guiding decisions for the NHS and the public sector

Healthcare systems, such as the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, and public sector organisations face difficult decisions on allocating resources, with these choices having a direct impact on patient care and public health outcomes. At YHEC, we provide independent health economic expertise to underpin these decisions. Our work supports a wide range of healthcare-system and public-sector clients in making evidence-based choices.

How can YHEC support healthcare systems and the public sector?

We provide strategic guidance and analytical support to health systems, government bodies, and non-commercial organisations at both national and local levels:

YHEC provides expert support to national policy makers. We help to:

  • Advise on the economic feasibility of innovation associated with the NHS 10-Year Health Plan.
  • Evaluate the costs and benefits of national policy initiatives using statistical analysis of large datasets.
  • Analyse the economic impact of decisions by the Department of Health and Social Care for Government spending reviews.
  • Synthesise evidence sources to provide insights for policy development and resource allocation.

We support national health systems in making large-scale, evidence-based decisions that impact public policy and resource allocation. We help to:

  • Evaluate the cost-effectiveness and impact of new service delivery models and interventions on a national scale.
  • Advise on the establishment of new health models, such as the introduction of interventions in primary care and approaches to public health.
  • Assess incentives to improve performance against targets and waiting times.
  • Consider the efficient use of commissioner and provider funding models to optimise productivity and health outcomes.

YHEC works with local health and social care systems to address challenges and inform optimal commissioning and resource management. We help to:

  • Provide demand and capacity modelling to support strategic commissioning.
  • Analyse the cost-effectiveness of innovations, including digital health, for specific local populations.
  • Evaluate the deployment of new technologies in local health settings, using real-world data.
  • Develop economic models to understand budget impacts and consider the efficient and optimal use of resources within funding constraints.
  • Analyse reconfigured care pathways and services, such as diagnostics and emergency care, to improve productivity and patient outcomes.
  • Evaluate the implementation of national policy at local levels, such as approaches to addressing health inequalities and environmental sustainability.

YHEC provides support to non-commercial organisations (including Health Innovation Networks), charities, and public health bodies. We help them to:

  • Assess the broader societal impact of a disease or condition, including direct health costs, productivity losses and caregiver burden.
  • Analyse patient-reported outcome and experience measures to support patient advocacy and commissioning.
  • Synthesise evidence to support funding applications, advocacy campaigns, and policy.
  • Provide strategic advice on how to communicate evidence to key stakeholders, including government and health systems.

YHEC also has a long-standing history of working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in England. Find out more about our collaborations with NICE .
