Critical appraisal

Critical appraisal is the systematic process of evaluating research (e.g. clinical trial, meta-analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis) to assess the validity and appropriate application of its methods, the accuracy of its reported results, and the justification for the authors’ interpretation of those results. This process is applicable to various types of research relevant to health technology assessment, and several established checklists provide guidance for appraising different study designs.
