Clinical outcome assessment

A clinical outcome assessment (COA) is a measure that captures how a patient feels, functions, or survives. COAs are categorised into several types based on the reporter or the method of assessment:

  • Observer-reported outcomes (ObsROs), which are reports from individuals other than the patient (e.g. caregivers)
  • Clinician-reported outcomes (ClinROs), which represent a healthcare professional’s evaluation of a patient’s condition
  • Performance outcomes (PerfOs), which are objective measures of a patient’s ability to perform specific tasks
