Cognitive interviewing

Cognitive interviewing is a method employed in the development and refinement of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to elicit the patient’s perspective on specific domains or individual items within the PROM. These one-on-one interviews with patients can occur during the initial development of a PROM or at later stages of the validation process. The primary goals of cognitive interviewing are to assess patients’ comprehension of the questions (or items), the relevance and clarity of the question content, and whether the PROM adequately covers all domains that are important to individuals living with a particular condition.
