True negative

A true negative is a test result that correctly indicates the absence of a condition when it is, in fact, absent. For example, a diagnostic test that correctly identifies a healthy individual as being healthy. This is the desired outcome for an individual without the disease, as it avoids unnecessary worry, further testing, and potential misdiagnosis. The rate of true negatives is one of the key components used to determine a test’s specificity.
