Health Economics for Strategic Commissioning
Description
As the demand for health and care services grows and finances become more constrained, there is an increasing need for economic evaluation in the public sector. NHS, social care and public health organisations are expected to economically justify any changes in care pathways. They should consider not only the cost-effectiveness but also the affordability of new initiatives.
This half-day training course will provide an overview of health economics within the context of the NHS. The session will provide an overview of how the NHS and integrated care systems (ICSs) operate and how health economics can be used to develop business cases in this context.
Topics that will be covered include:
- Structures of the NHS and social care and the implications this can have for decision making
- How funding moves around the NHS
- How decisions are made in the NHS – cost effectiveness, affordability, and return on investment
- Components of a business case

The course would be of benefit to those working in the NHS and public sector, people involved with or implementing or creating digital health technologies, or people who would like a greater understanding of different components of decision making.
This course can be taken independently, or will be complementary to 3 other courses:

- Public Health and Wider Policy Considerations
We recommend that people with no background or exposure to health economics also take the ‘What Can Health Economics Do for You?’ course.
YHEC’s training courses are not recorded. However, the slides will be shared with those who attended the session.
All of YHEC’s courses have limited places available to ensure that sessions permit discussion and interaction with the group. We can also offer bespoke training courses to accommodate a larger number of attendees.
As of 2020, all of YHEC’s training courses will be held virtually. If you would prefer to attend a face-to-face course, we can provide a bespoke training course held at your preferred location.
The course fee (less 10% administrative charge) will be refunded for cancellations received in writing at least one month prior to the training. Substitutes can be made, but please email the new attendee details to [email protected].
Cancellations made less than one month prior to the study day are not refundable. In the unlikely event that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the training course has to be cancelled, only the course fees will be refunded.
