What Can Health Economics Do For You?
Description
Health economics helps to inform difficult decisions around the prioritisation of resources within healthcare systems. It is vital for decision makers to consider the health economic implications of funding new interventions in health and social care, to maximise population health while spending budgets efficiently. It is also important that the developers of innovations consider the economic impact of their interventions, to ensure that a compelling business case can be developed, and the product development cycle is as efficient as possible.
This half day training course will introduce key concepts of health economics, with a focus on the benefits that considering these concepts can have for both decision makers and for developers/innovators. The session will provide an overview of why health economics is important and how economic evaluations can be used to assist with decision making.
Topics that will be covered include:
- Principles of health economic evaluations and how they are helpful
- Costs and benefits – what are they and how can they be measured?
- Use of economic models and dealing with uncertainty

The course would be of benefit to those working in the NHS and public sector, people involved with or implementing public health interventions, or people who would like a greater understanding of different components of decision making, such as companies with new health technologies.
This course can be taken independently, or will be complimentary to 3 other courses:
YHEC’s training courses are not recorded. However, the slides will be shared with those who attended the session.
All of YHEC’s courses have limited places available to ensure that sessions permit discussion and interaction with the group. We can also offer bespoke training courses to accommodate a larger number of attendees.
As of 2020, all of YHEC’s training courses will be held virtually. If you would prefer to attend a face-to-face course, we can provide a bespoke training course held at your preferred location.
The course fee (less 10% administrative charge) will be refunded for cancellations received in writing at least one month prior to the training. Substitutes can be made, but please email the new attendee details to [email protected].
Cancellations made less than one month prior to the study day are not refundable. In the unlikely event that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the training course has to be cancelled, only the course fees will be refunded.
