Effectiveness refers to the ability of an intervention (drug, device, treatment, test, pathway etc.) to provide the desired outcome(s) in the relevant patient population. Effectiveness is typically assessed through a clinical trial. When considered at the same time as cost-effectiveness and side effects, the effectiveness of an intervention can be measured in QALYs, or quality-adjusted life years.
