Public Health Economics and Wider Policy Considerations
Description
Many public-sector bodies are under pressure to achieve efficiency and productivity savings in order to balance budgets. However, there is also an increased focus on public health spending to achieve long-term gains to health and reduced spending. As with all healthcare decisions, there are trade-offs and wider policy considerations when deciding to allocate funding to new healthcare interventions or programmes.
This half-day training course will provide an understanding of the principles of modelling public health interventions. The course will also focus on some of the methods and techniques used in wider policy considerations, including health inequalities and environmental sustainability. Finally, we will cover what implementation science is and the value it has in optimising benefit of new healthcare interventions.
Topics that will be covered include:
- What are the challenges and solutions to modelling public health interventions?
- How do we account for health inequalities in decision making?
- How can we incorporate environmental sustainability into decision making?
- What is implementation science, and why is it important to optimise the benefit of new healthcare interventions?

This course would be of benefit to those working in the NHS and public sector, people involved with public health interventions, or people who would like a greater understanding of different components of decision making.
This course can be taken independently, or will be complementary to three other courses:
YHEC’s training courses are not recorded. However, the slides will be shared with the attendees after the session.
All of YHEC’s courses have limited places available to ensure that sessions permit discussion and interaction with the group. We can also offer bespoke training courses to accommodate a larger number of attendees.
As of 2020, all of YHEC’s training courses will be held virtually. If you would prefer to attend a face-to-face course, we can provide a bespoke training course held at your preferred location.
The course fee (less 10% administrative charge) will be refunded for cancellations received in writing at least one month prior to the training. Substitutes can be made, but please email the new attendee details to yhec@york.ac.uk.
Cancellations made less than one month prior to the study day are not refundable. In the unlikely event that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the training course has to be cancelled, only the course fees will be refunded.
